Once again, WorldUP (
worldup.org) was invited by the Hive NYC (
explorecreateshare.org) to run a digital music workshop, this time at the super cool 2012 MakerFaire & naturally we had to oblige!
DJ SpazeCraft was gifted this awesome new IPad app called "WerkBench" by it's developer (& Friend), Karl Scholz
(
www.bolasol.com/werkbench/ )
Karl knew Spaze would love it & suggested he give it a spin.
Little did he know that it was a perfect compliment to Spaze's arsenal of audio tools used in The Living Remix Project workshops!!!
We are proud to pilot the app at the MakerFaire edition of The Living Remix Project & what better name to give this iteration then, Sample U! (an introduction to the simple science of sampling sound)
The Sample U! workshop brings participants through the process of gathering sound bytes as scientific "samples". (no experience in making music is required nor is scientific knowledge of musical concepts needed, however, the participants at MakerFaire were all quite savvy in *S.T.E.M. concepts)
In a sonic collage experiment YOU (& the environment) are the main sound sources for an improvised exercise in composition, sequencing & study.
Sample U! comes complete with a "Sampling" vocabulary that directly relates to the basic processes involved in creating audio samples & "coloring" your sound with effects & filters.
Learning about *S.T.E.M. was never this fun!!!

The Living Remix Project | Sample U! Vocabulary
Sound Wave:
A sound wave is the pattern of disturbance caused by the movement of energy traveling through a medium (such as air, water, or any other liquid or solid matter)
So whats the difference between a Sound Wave & a Light Wave?
Light is a disturbance of electric and magnetic fields that travels in the form of a wave. Imagine throwing a pebble into a still pond and watching the circular ripples moving outward.
What is Sampling?
In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece.
Often "samples" consist of one part of a song, such as a rhythm break, which is then used to construct the beat for another song.
Sampling was originally developed by experimental musicians working with musique concrète and electroacoustic music, who physically manipulated tape loops or vinyl records on a phonograph. In the 1970s, DJs who experimented with manipulating vinyl on two turntables gave birth to hip hop music, the first popular music genre based originally around the art of sampling.
A “SOUND BITE” is a short clip of speech or music extracted from a longer piece of audio.
What is PITCH?
In music, the technical term used to describe how high or low a note is. It depends on the FREQUENCY (number of vibrations per second) of the sound
What is a SEQUENCE?
In music, a sequence is the immediate restatement of a motif or longer melodic (or harmonic) passage at a higher or lower pitch in the same voice. It is one of the most common and simple methods of elaborating a melody in one direction.
Thanks for being a part of our collective song!
